Through the Lens: Portland/Mt.Hood (Winter '26)
.
Any trip seemingly takes effort to make it happen. Planning, execution, time, and money - to name a simple few. But when it happens, it all makes sense.
Overdue for some time, a chance to catch up with like minded friends (one of which lives in Portlandia) was needed. Energy of a solid visit, incredible food, but also solid nature immersion.
A few highlights here through the lens - until next time for certain.. Thanks, Ross B -
**First, a disclaimer/note. The new Mass Timber Portland Airport Terminal by ZGF Architects deserves its own post, but we refrained here from piling on as there is plenty online. Next time perhaps.. No question it is a great bookend for a trip and jaw dropping to see in person. More mass timber. More (smart/local) use of wood. Period. **
One Must Go
To the Mountain —> The drive makes it feel a touch more removed, but it in turn gives one the sheer sense of scale in the volcanic terrain. Resulting in rapid change of climate, flora, fauna and geology. Skiing at Mt Hood Meadows a natural target activity, but also a bit of a circumnavigation to see the mountain from different angles & textures is a treat. Most anyone agrees that last Winter’s snowpack was odd and even within one day, the snow changed 4x on us. Nature doesn’t give a rip, only we do. Roll with it.
Society Hotel - Bingen, Washington
Better to stay close by and ‘up’ from the City between ski days. The Society Hotel Spa does an incredible job. Adjacent to the Columbia River, water is an influence, so it is easy to consider the spa option to relax, all while a scoot to White Salmon for dining is a stone’s throw away. Or, there is Margie’s Pot Shop if that’s your jam (or need! based on your day).
Vertical cladding and metal roof never tires, especially when balanced with thoughtful landscaping and good design. Completed in 2019 by Waechter Architecture out of Portland, they completely knocked it out of the park. Rooms are tidy, with kitchens and full baths, but the main focus here is being outside. Inside is a means to an end.
